I earlier stated that the letters of which we had copies, were in the Jerrais language. That was incorrect; they are in French. It is my understanding that the Jerrais language was not so much a written language but rather a spoken language not often written. I remember the old Jersey men at the beach in Paspébiac thus speaking among themselves. French is still the official language of Jersey and when I was there in 2008, the laws of the Island were still written in French, so I was informed. We have original copies of some 20 letters which Phillip received and which we hope to get translated into English. They have been typed into readable French.. If anyone can help with this task svp. let me know.. Update #2 |
